America's entanglement with Israel

Why the Israel lobby wants the U.S. to protect the Syrian people

with 7 comments

In an October 19 Washington Institute for Near East Policy policy alert, Robert Satloff declares:

It is time for the Obama administration to take the lead in organizing international protection for the embattled Syrian people. Already, more Syrians have died at the hands of their despotic ruler than was the case in Libya when the United States endorsed the call for humanitarian intervention in that country. This fact — not the absence of Arab League endorsement or the inability to overcome Russian and Chinese vetoes at the Security Council — should govern the direction of U.S. policy.

But before anyone starts to think that Satloff will be calling for a no-fly zone over Gaza next, the executive director of the AIPAC-created think tank shows his hand:

And when this fact is combined with the strategic opportunity of contributing to the demise of Iran’s premier Arab ally, Washington should be working overtime to act in defense of the Syrian people.

  1. At a Bar-Ilan University Press conference recently Israel FM Lieberman threatened that in the next round of conflict with Syria neither Assad nor his family would remain in power.

One assumed Lieberman knew something the rest of us didn’t but it seems Assad has survived unlike Ghadaffi and Lieberman must be shivering at the knees for he will now have to deal with a stronger, more emboldened Assad who will be even more forceful in his demand for the return of the Golan Heights.

  2. Thank you for the information about Lieberman. I think it’s too early, however, to say that Assad has survived.

  5. Agree, it ain’t over till the fat lady sings, but then neither is the debacle in Libya. Just watching the way the wind blows, NATO’s reputation as a defender of the people is obviously in tatters for they exceeded the No Fly Zone mandate to protect the Libyan civilians. NATO is therefore complicit in the death of thousands and Rasmussen must be hauled before la Hague as a criminal.

NATO coalition of the dummies in cohoots with the Benghazi rebels unable to win IN Afghanistan needed to ‘win’ in Libya lest it become as relevant as tits on a bull, so in a frenzy bombed Libya to smithereens to inflict on the hapless Libyans an illegal regime that was never mandated by the Libyan people.

It is therefore unlikely under the present circumstances that other Members Nations, who have a right to feel justifiable angry at NATO conduct, i.e. China and Russia, will not veto any similar resolution brought against Assad…

  6. Let’s hope that China and Russia won’t be bitten a second time. There will be all kinds of pressure applied on them, however: see my post “Israel lobby cutout advises U.S. to ‘induce Beijing to reassess its approach to Iran.’” They should know better though. If NDI chairman John McCain is to be believed, Beijing and Moscow are the ultimate targets of the “Arab Spring.”
